Biography
Chillicothe is the new country music project from Florida/Texas singer-songwriter Nicholas Altobelli, whose work has garnered critical acclaim, including Kids being named one of the best indie releases of 2020 by American Songwriter and a 2013 review of Without a Home in No Depression calling his music "Pop perfection." Set for release on June 6th via Dalton Records, and inspired by a small Texas town he would pass every year during storm-chasing adventures, Chillicothe represents both a geographical and emotional waypoint in Altobelli’s work.
The debut album, Funnel Cloud Town, leans heavily into the storytelling tradition of country and Americana music, setting it apart from Altobelli’s earlier introspective work. Produced by John Dufilho (The Deathray Davies, Apples in Stereo), the record is rich with collaborative talent, featuring Salim Nourallah (Rhett Miller, Old 97’s) on bass and Leoncarlo Canlas (The Polyphonic Spree) on violin. The result is a lush tapestry of sound that underpins the poignant narratives at the heart of the album.
Funnel Cloud Town, is a journey through the storms of life—both literal and metaphorical. From the rural desolation of “Texola” to the aching reflections of love and loss in “Grocery Store Flowers,” Altobelli’s songwriting captures the raw essence of human experience. Tracks like “Dead Man Walking” and the titular “Funnel Cloud Town” vividly depict nature’s power as a metaphor for life’s unpredictability, while “What the Stars Have Made” offers a societal critique.
For fans of richly detailed songwriting and emotive melodies, Chillicothe is a project that stands at the crossroads of tradition and innovation—a new chapter in Nicholas Altobelli’s career. With Funnel Cloud Town, Chillicothe invites listeners to ride out life’s storms and find beauty in the wreckage.
The result is a collection of songs that resonate with humor, heartbreak, and humanity. Featuring elements like pedal steel, violin, and banjo, Funnel Cloud Town melds traditional country instrumentation with modern narrative depth, creating a sound as timeless as the themes it explores.
